Everyone's nervous at first. That's the job.

Clutch teaches teens and adults in dual-control cars, with instructors chosen for patience. Lessons run 90 minutes, you keep the same instructor through the road test, and after every lesson your family gets a note on exactly what was practiced.

How lessons work

Ninety calm minutes, and your parents see all of it.

We come to you

Pickup at home or school. The lesson starts in your own driveway, on streets you already know, and widens out from there.

90 minutes, not 45

Long enough to warm up, learn one new skill, and repeat it until it stops being scary. Short lessons teach adrenaline. Long ones teach driving.

One instructor, start to finish

Same person, same car, every lesson. Your instructor knows exactly which intersection still needs work.

Parents see everything

After every lesson, a note on what was practiced, what improved, and what to work on before next time. Not a report card at the end.

Progress noteLesson 4 of 6 · 4:52 PM

Nora drove 34 minutes today. Most of it was lane changes and mirror habits, then two laps of unprotected lefts at the Corliss Ave light. She's checking blind spots without prompting now. This week: practice smooth stops from 40 in an empty lot. Highway next Tuesday.

Femi · Clutch

A real note, word for word the kind a parent gets. After every lesson, not just the last one.

The instructors

Chosen for patience, not just credentials.

Femi Adeyemi, Clutch instructor, standing by a sedan

Femi Adeyemi

State-certified · 21 years · about 1,400 students

"I have a brake on my side and nowhere else to be. Take your time." Nobody, in 21 years, has heard Femi raise his voice.

Dana Merrick, Clutch instructor, leaning on a car door

Dana Merrick

State-certified · former paramedic · nervous-adult specialist

Dana spent twelve years driving an ambulance, so a stalled car at a green light does not register as an emergency. Ask for her by name.

Background checks and state certification are table stakes. We hire for the hour a student is shaking at a four-way stop, because that hour is the whole job.

For nervous adults

No one here will be annoyed with you.

Maybe you never learned. Maybe you moved here from a city with real trains, or a country where you drove on the other side. Maybe there was an accident, and the highway has not felt possible since.

About a third of our students are adults, and most arrive saying the same sentence: "I'm probably your worst student." You are not. You are Tuesday. Adult lessons are booked one at a time, at your pace, with zero package pressure.

First lessons start in an empty parking lot at 7am. Nobody honks at 7am.

Road test day

You take the test in the car you learned in.

Test-day nerves are mostly car nerves, so we remove the car. Ours comes with you: the same seat position, the same mirrors, the same brake pedal that has been quietly backing you up since lesson one.

We meet you at the DMV thirty minutes early, run the parking maneuvers once, and wait in the lobby. Most students tell us the test felt easier than lesson five. It was designed to.

The honest FAQ

The answers other schools mumble.

How many lessons will my kid actually need?

Honestly: most teens need 8 to 12 lessons before the road test. Closer to 8 if they are also practicing with you between lessons, closer to 12 if the car only moves during lessons. Adults refreshing old skills usually need 3 to 5. We will tell you where your student sits after lesson two, and we do not sell lessons a student does not need.

Manual or automatic?

We teach in automatics, which is what the road test expects and what nearly every student will drive. If you want a manual for life reasons (a farm truck, a move abroad, a stubborn dream of an old roadster), Femi keeps a manual sedan and teaches it as a two-lesson add-on after you have passed.

Do you provide the insurance discount certificate?

Yes. Every completed package includes the state completion certificate most insurers accept for a teen-policy discount, commonly 5 to 15 percent. We email it the day you finish, and we will resend it in three years when you cannot find it.

What if we need to cancel a lesson?

Give us 24 hours and there is no charge and no questions. Less than that and we charge half, because your instructor is already on the way. Sick students should stay home: illness cancellations are always free.

Booking

Scheduling is by text, because you are busy.
